While Catchpole & Rye might be best known for our passion for antique baths and our faithful replicas of 19th-century French designs, we are also innovators. Perhaps the most striking example of this is the latest addition to our collection – The Mayfair shower tray, a ground-breaking design that has been turning heads since its launch earlier this year.
The Mayfair is a custom-made, mirrored shower tray with a distinctive, square-edged plinth. Mirror is, of course, a common feature in bathrooms, and we are all accustomed to seeing high-shine finishes on taps and towel rails, but it is not something that has been used on shower trays – until now.
The Mayfair is the perfect blend of form and function: its unusual finish elevates it from the everyday to the exceptional, without sacrificing any of the practicality that is essential. An unusual crisscross of grooves not only creates a stunning design feature but also delivers the very best in functionality by guiding the water into the centrally positioned shower waste.
Its sleek, glamorous aesthetic would work particularly well in a contemporary bathroom and is the perfect partner for Catchpole & Rye’s range of Le Thermo showers. It can be made to order in a choice of silver nickel, brass or copper finishes and, because it is made and hand finished in our Kent workshop, bespoke sizes are also available.
‘The Mayfair really is a one-of-a-kind design,’ says Tony O’Donnell, MD of Catchpole & Rye.
‘We all know that mirror enhances the sense of light and space in a room, but using this finish to create a statement shower tray is something of a departure from the norm. It has a luxury aesthetic that draws the eye, making it an unexpectedly opulent focal point.’
It’s true that when we talk about a focal point in the bathroom, we’re usually referring to showstoppers such as a freestanding roll-top bath, an imposing marble-topped vanity unit or perhaps a beautifully designed walk-in shower enclosure. It’s not often that the shower tray itself steals the limelight – so what was the inspiration behind the design?
‘It was really just a natural expansion of our range,’ explains Tony. ‘Our brass, copper and nickel baths have proved incredibly popular with our customers, but there wasn’t a shower tray on the market that had the same kind of “wow factor.” We wanted to create something that not only complemented the look of our other brass and copper products but also matched them in terms of impact; The Mayfair does that with aplomb.’
